Colder temperatures in the mountains will probably then allow for the first snowflakes of the season to fall above about 3,000 feet in elevation this evening.

In the highest most favorable locations, an inch or two is possible, with the best chances being in the Smokies and areas near the North Carolina/Tennessee border.

Usually, the first flakes of the season bring excitement. However, because of the ongoing recovery efforts in western North Carolina following Helene, most would prefer the weather to remain as quiet as possible.

Separate from the brief chance of precipitation, the cold temperatures will remain in place through the rest of the workweek. A few mountain locations had a freeze this morning, and many locations will see subfreezing temperatures tomorrow, Thursday and Friday morning.

Daytime highs will remain chilly. In fact, tomorrow, higher elevation locations are unlikely to make it out of the 40s for highs.
