Yankees fans aren’t the only ones excited about the team’s playoff appearance — businesses are also October-ready.

“We’re here, we worked all season, the Yankees worked all season to get to this point,” Sheila Smith, owner of Dugout BX, a bar right next to Yankee Stadium, said. “Every business around the stadium is just excited, and just looking forward to this day.”

After a disappointing season last year, the Bronx Bombers have a shot at winning the World Series. The playoffs bring a big economic boost for local businesses in the Concourse neighborhood, including the bars, restaurants and shops around Yankee Stadium.

“It gets crowded, especially when it’s the playoffs,” Alawi Ahmed, a store clerk at Pinstripe Collectibles next to the stadium, said.

The New York City Economic Development Corporation said games at Yankee Stadium generated more than $600 million in economic impact over the course of the regular season. Business owners in the neighborhood say a postseason run helps the local economy.

“This year, it won’t be a ghost town after this season. Because it really is like a ghost town if there ain’t no Yankees fans around here, literally, it’s biting teeth in the neighborhood. It’s actually really, really hard to accommodate the neighborhood because there is no neighborhood as much,” Joseph Michialis, co-owner of Yankee Twin Eatery Bar, said.

Yankees fans have dubbed this run the “chase for 28” to get the franchise’s 28th World Series title.

“We’re just ready, we’re ready for the folks to come in and spend money,” Smith said.

“I’ve been in operation for about six years, but I’ve been on the block for the past 40 years, on this block, so I’m part of the families, and I’m a staple on the ground — like a piece of gum on the floor,” Michialis said.

Michialis says he cares about the Yankees because he believes Yankees fans are the best in the world. “Diehard, passionate, ambitious,” he said when describing the fan base.

“It keeps the business running, like last year after July, the business dropped by 50% and the sales revenue dropped from 2022 when they did good, but they got swept by Houston four games in a row,” Ahmed said. “We want them to win the 28th World Series championship and hopefully it’s this year with Juan Soto and Aaron Judge.”
