It's a time of celebration for the Yankees fans who call themselves the “Terrace Squad." The Bronx Bombers are headed to the playoffs, after not making it to the postseason last year.
John Brown, who lives about a block away from Yankee Stadium, has been rooting for the Yanks since he was practically born, attending his first game at age 4.
What You Need To Know
- After a disappointing season last year, Yankees fans are once again excited that their Bronx Bombers have a shot at winning the World Series
- The "Terrace Squad," which was formed around seven years ago, is a group made up of self-proclaimed "super fanatics," hanging out at the Toyota Terrace part of the stadium
- The Yankees will start their 59th postseason on Oct. 5 at home
“My old man, he scraped together whatever change he had when I was young to take me to a game, things that I never forgot, you know?" Brown said. "So, when I got my first big boy job, my first thing was I’m gonna get season tickets. I’m gonna repay him and everything like that. Definitely shout out to my dad, he definitely got me into the sport."
Into, and then some. Brown and the rest of his crew say they’re “super fanatics,” having formed their Terrace Squad group around seven years ago. It's an extension of the Bleacher Creatures, hanging out at the Toyota Terrace part of the stadium.
These die-hard fans attend around 50 games each season together.
Queens-born Caleb Vasquez said he represents the Bronx team through and through, despite what his family thinks of it.
“It was kinda a little rivalry thing between me and my father. He liked the Mets. I loved the Yankees, and the Yankees were winning, and so you know, just the pinstripes, that’s what made me fall in love with them, Derek Jeter,” said Vasquez, recalling his childhood growing up as a Yankees fan in his household.
This group has also grown over the years. One of the newest members of the Terrace Squad is Bronx-born-and-raised Angelina Acosta.
“I found myself here because this is the loudest place in the stadium, and I wanna be just as loud with them. It’s the best stadium experience you’re gonna get here,” said Acosta.
Brown admits it takes a serious level of dedication to be a member, while juggling work and life.
“A lot of emailing, 'Hey, can you cover me for this, can you cover me for that,' canceling family trips, a lot of that, but we love being here. I’d rather be around these guys than my own family sometimes, don’t tell them that,” said Brown.
Once strangers watching the game – to family. All rooting for their favorite baseball team to win the World Series.
“This means a lot to all of us here, finally making it to October, meaningful baseball, October here. This is where you wanna be, right here at Yankee Stadium, for sure,” said Vasquez.
“Nothing but big things coming soon, let’s go Yankees,” said Brown.
The Yankees will start their 59th postseason on Oct. 5 at home. It’s a best-of-five series.
