A man is dead after police say they responded to a series of 911 calls in East Harlem Sunday morning.

Two NYPD officers opened fire after they say the 62-year-old man refused to drop his gun.

Police say they received multiple calls around 12:30 a.m. Sunday about a man with a gun near 103rd Street and Third Avenue by the Washington Houses.

The scene was still active around 7 a.m. Sunday but crime scene unit investigators have since left. Evidence markers were placed on the ground to indicate the shots fired.

According to the NYPD’s use of force report, there have been more than two dozen incidents so far this year in which officers used firearms. There were 45 in total last year.

Investigators said the man’s gun was recovered at the scene. He was taken to Harlem Hospital after the shooting and pronounced dead.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
