CHARLTON, Mass. — Dozens of people gathered in Charlton on Sunday for the Charlton Arts & Activity Center Blueberry Festival.

Organizers said most of the blueberries seen at the event were grown locally at Fay Mountain Farm.

People used the blueberries to make a variety of treats, including shortbread, donuts, ice cream, muffins and cookies.

Don Konopacki of the Charlton Activities Council said the annual festival got started roughly seven years ago as a way to give the town a unique event not seen nearby.

“I think it’s very important to find some little niche we can have. There are plenty of festivals that go around, but nobody has a blueberry festival,” Konopacki said. "One of our members said 'Hey, why don't we have a blueberry festival?' And without having a lot of experience doing this stuff, went to see if it would fly and sure enough it did, we've been doing it ever since."

There were even blueberry treats for dogs, and dozens of other vendors were also on site selling homemade arts and crafts.
