A slice of Brooklyn has arrived in Midtown Manhattan.

Roberta's is a Bushwick restaurant that has become famous for its pizza since its opening in 2007. Now, it has a new outpost at Plaza 33 in the Penn District, the redeveloped area near Penn Station and Madison Square Garden.

What You Need To Know

  • Roberta’s has opened a new restaurant at Plaza 33 in the Penn District

  • The eatery first opened in 2007 in Bushwick, Brooklyn

  • The new outpost features a slice shop and full-service restaurant with a roof deck and tiki bar

Brandon Hoy, who co-owns Roberta’s with chef Carlo Mirarchi, said there are always some butterflies opening a new place.

“Opening is always a difficult and strenuous kind of process. I pretty much never want to open a restaurant again while I’m opening a restaurant, and then in three weeks I’m like, 'What’s the next restaurant we are going to open?'" said Hoy, who showed NY1 around the multi-level spot.

The new location includes takeout on the ground floor, with a newer concept for Roberta’s — R Slice. It’s New York-style slices, which is something they began four months ago in Bushwick.

“That was something over the last 17 years we had never done, and everyone was like, when are you guys going to do slices, that we just started doing,” Hoy said.

There is artwork from LAmour Supreme on the stairs to the second level, a nod to the Bushwick location.

There is a full-service restaurant on the second floor, not to mention a tiki bar with cool views of Madison Square Garden and Seventh Avenue.

As for the food, of course there is pizza, but Hoy said that’s not all Roberta’s is about.

“The full-service restaurant is really an expression of what the group does completely, it’s the cocktails, the wine list, the food that’s not pizza, the pizza, all of those things coming together and making for a very interesting dining experience," Hoy said.

As Hoy says, the pizza pays the bills, but at the end of the day, they are really proud of the other things that they do.
