The NYPD said its members will be out in full force as thousands head into Manhattan for the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks show.

“We’ve been preparing for this since July 5th of 2023,” Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said. “You will see some of the assets, like uniformed members in the street, you’ll see our K-9 deployments, some of our counterterrorism deployment. You’ll see members at our entry points doing soft screenings, making sure people are not bringing in anything that’s unauthorized. And of course, there’ll be security measures that you won’t see.”

This is the 48th year for the fireworks display and the first time since 2013 that the show will be held on the Hudson River. Police said the west side will be easier to patrol compared to the East River in years prior.

“We’re talking about two different roadways. You have the FDR Drive which is elevated, and then also just a regular street level. So on the west side, we’re not dealing with that — we’re dealing with just a straight, level road, which, of course, will be a little easier. We don’t have to put officers up top so we’ll be able to put more officers on the street level,” Maddrey said.

Officials say more police work for the Fourth of July begins after the annual event. Chief of Patrol John Chell said immediately following the show, officers will be redeployed to parts of the city where police received a high volume of fireworks calls and shots fired calls last year.

“For our special staffing, we’re going to be heavy in the Bronx, or heavy in the northern part of Brooklyn. We added 13 additional zones, if you will, to Fourth of July for us to police. We’ll be looking at parks early on in the night, especially in the northern part of Manhattan,” Chell said.

City officials say there are no credible threats to the city and that public transportation is the best way to get around during the festivities. Additional officers and plainclothes officers will be deployed into the subway system. NYPD officials said they encourage everyone to head to the west side to enjoy the holiday tradition.

“Enjoy the show, enjoy the backyard parties, enjoy your family and friends. We’ll be out there in full force to make everybody safe as possible,” Chell said.

Last year, injuries from fireworks increased compared to the year prior, with 36 firework-related emergency room visits, according to the NYC Department of Health. Officials also remind New Yorkers that fireworks are illegal in the city, and to leave them to the professionals.
