A Delta flight bound for Amsterdam diverted to John F. Kennedy International Airport early Wednesday morning after passengers were served spoiled food, the airline said.

The flight, which took off from Detroit carrying 277 passengers, was rerouted to JFK after crew members discovered that “a portion of the Main Cabin in-flight meal service [was] spoiled,” a Delta spokesperson said in a statement.

Crew members consulted with medical experts, who recommended the plane land in New York, Delta said.

While Delta could not immediately say how many passengers ate the spoiled food, the spokesperson said medical personnel “met the aircraft to treat any affected passengers and crew members.”

The flight landed at JFK around 4 a.m., the airline said. The FDNY said emergency responders evaluated 12 people at the airport, all of whom refused medical attention.

“Delta’s Food Safety team has engaged our suppliers to immediately isolate the product and launch a thorough investigation into the incident,” the spokesperson said.

“This is not the service Delta is known for and we sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delay in their travels,” the spokesperson added.
