Fishbone, the ska, funk, punk, metal band that formed in LA in 1979, led by the energetic founder, singer and sax player Angelo Moore says their music has a lot of influences.

“Rock, Reggae, everybody knows what reggae is, soul music, everybody knows what soul music is,” Moore said.

Fishbone is playing as part of one of 15 free concerts and performances this summer for “BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn!”

What You Need To Know

  • “BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn!” is a performing arts festival at the Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park

  • There are also pop-up shows in Highland and Brower Parks

  • There are 15 free shows throughout the summer

Most of the shows are at the Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park. The performing arts festival was founded in 1979 to reinvigorate the park, which back then wasn’t considered the safest place to be.

Saidah Blount is in her first year heading up the festival, produced by BRIC, the Brooklyn-based arts and cultural institution.

“We’re super excited to be presenting a lineup that is deemed as Raised By Brooklyn. We’re celebrating the genres, style, the swagger of Brooklyn and its global effects,” Blount said.

Upcoming highlights include Meshell Ndogocello, Thee Sacred Souls, and more. The festival also features pop up performances at Highland Park in Cypress Hills and Brower Park in Crown Heights.

“We get to present a little bit of different lineup. For example, in Brower Park we are going to present a film as well as performance, so we’re excited we are going to bring something to one of the most beloved parks in Brooklyn,” Blount said.

It’s a summer tradition for families and New Yorkers. Angelo Moore says he is ready to bring it with Fishbone at the Lena Horne Bandshell.

“I still like to grab the lightning bolt. Let’s put it like that. I’m still able to grab the lightning bolt,” Moore said.
