“The Outsiders” proved that they were part of the in crowd at the 77th Annual Tony Awards. The show took home the coveted statue for best new musical. Danya Taymor also won for best director of a musical and the show picked up a Tony Award for lighting. 

The onetime Stephen Sondheim flop “Merrily We Roll Along” is a Tony Award-winning hit as it won for best musical revival. Jonathan Groff won for best lead actor in a musical for his portrayal of Franklin Shepard. 

“I never really was like I’m gonna win a Tony [Award] someday. That was never, I never like dreamt so big as to think of that. I just wanted to come to New York and be a part of this community and to be a working actor,” Groff said.

Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, turned up some Tony Awards magic and won a statue for best featured actor in a musical for the role of Charley Kringas.

“I was stunned like, wait, which of the nominees is Charley. I had really prepped myself to hear my name or not or a name that I knew of one of the other nominees and so I was like, ‘Oh! That is me! Oh god!’” Radcliffe said of hearing his character’s name instead of his own.

Sarah Paulson earned her first Tony Award for best lead actress in a play for “Appropriate” which also won best revival of a play.

“I started here and so to be here now and been like welcomed back with so much love and support has been so special,” Paulson said.

Jeremy Strong picked up the Tony Award for best lead actor in a play for his performance in the revival of “An Enemy of the People.”

“To get to make what feels like a dangerous and alive piece of art that touches the third rail of the time that we live in and to give that to audiences has just been amazing,” Strong said.

“Stereophonic” turned it up with the most volume of Tony Awards — five in total, including best new play.

New York City’s own Alicia Keys brought the energy of the Empire State to the David Koch Theatre with one of the most electric performances of the night, and a performance that included her pal JAY Z. Alicia’s show “Hell’s Kitchen” won two Tony Awards in the performance categories, Broadway newcomer Maleah Joi Moon won best lead actress in a musical and Broadway veteran Kecia Lewis won best featured actress in a musical.

“I’m thinking of my dad and how he came to every show. On his motorcycle, he was a Harley guy. I’m thinking of him saying you got this kid, keep going, keep going,” Lewis said. 

From the dazzling performances to the heartfelt speeches, the curtain falls on the 2023/2024 Broadway season.
