The morning after downed power lines halted many of Wednesday evening’s trains out of the city, Amtrak now says service has been fully restored, although commuters may still face knock-on effects while trains get back on schedule.
Commuters of NJ Transit and Amtrak trains were delayed for hours Wednesday evening at Penn Station. Those delays continued into Thursday morning, despite Amtrak saying service had been restored shortly after 7 a.m.
NJ Transit told customers to expect another day of delays.
“Customers should expect possible delays and cancellations today due to residual impacts resulting from crew availability and equipment that was out of position as a result of last evening’s service disruption caused by Amtrak’s overhead wire issues,” the agency posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, Thursday morning.
It was the second time this week that Amtrak’s overhead wires cause chaos. New Jersey Transit depends on Amtrak tracks for much of its service, and the problems Thursday morning were of at least two trains canceled and some delayed, which had riders either figuring out what to do or hoping there was no repeat of the night before.
“I just want to get to work on time. That’s it. I was late yesterday,” Peter Conyers, a commuter, said.
Around 8 a.m. Amtrak service was fully restored and riders traveling into Penn Station reported no issues.
“I was expecting some delays, but when I checked, everything looks like it was pretty good. So I came in,” Rob Duda, a commuter, said.
“They kept saying that there may be delays today, and you know, so we took an earlier training to make sure we got here because I have a doctor’s appointment,” Robert Terrano, another commuter, said. “It was fine.”
