CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man was charged with shooting five people during New Year’s Eve celebrations in Charlotte, while three Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers were injured and 18 arrests were made, according to police.
Daevion Crawford, 19, was arrested after he shot five people at Romare Bearden Park, police said in a news release. He was charged with five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and one count of going armed to the terror of the public.
The five victims were shot below their knees and suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.
CMPD says the shooting happened shortly after 11:30 p.m. as officers were patrolling the park, which is located off of S. Church Street. Officers say they heard gunshots and followed the sound.
Crawford was taken into custody, and bond was set at $750,000.
Overall, 11 youths and six of their parents/guardians were arrested in "multiple disturbances" through the night in Uptown, police said. Two guns were seized by officers.
Two CMPD officers were assaulted and another suffered minor injuries when a chemical substance was thrown at the officer.
