More than 50 illegal firearms were surrendered Saturday as part of a gun buyback event in Flatbush.

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said he felt relief.

“Today we had a successful event.” Gonzalez said. “We got over 50 guns, including ghost guns and assault weapons. Brooklyn is a little safer today than when we started earlier today.”

The Brooklyn DA’s office hosted the event. Gonzalez said over the past two years, their continued efforts to provide monetary incentives and a "no questions asked" policy has led to about 400 guns being surrendered.

“It’s my highest priority.” Gonzalez said. “Gun violence continues to be what causes families to feel insecure about their personal safety in the city. Brooklyn has made a lot of progress this year. We’re down over 25% from where we were at last year, and last year we were down from the year before. So there is good news!”

“We know inflation is high, cost of living is high,” Gonzalez said. “$400 today, right before the Christmas holidays, right after Hanukkah, before Kwanzaa, we know this money is going to be useful for families.”

The NYPD also said the city saw an 18.8% reduction in shooting incidents during the month of November this year, compared to November 2022.

The Brooklyn DA says he’s been asked repeatedly to host additional gun buy back events. He said they present a major opportunity to surrender a firearm, both safely and without penalty.
