The attempted arrest of a wanted man ended in gunfire after a stand-off on the Lower East Side.
“It sounded like fireworks. Four fireworks,” said Thomas Harrell, who lives across the street from where the shooting took place. “We’re not the kind to have a situation this dangerous.”
Officers tried to execute a search warrant at 206 Eldridge Street just before noon on Thursday. The suspect in question was 43-year-old Kent Edwards.
Edwards was wanted for a shooting that happened outside an Upper East Side bar in October.
“Our officers become aware that the suspect we were looking for was in the bathroom, armed with a firearm,” said Jeffrey Maddrey, NYPD Chief of Department.
Authorities said officers with the Emergency Service Unit had conversations with Edwards in an attempt to get him to surrender peacefully. When he refused, officers used a drone to go inside the bathroom, but Edwards allegedly swatted it with a broom.
After a 2.5 hour-long stand-off, shots rang out.
“Mr. Edwards shoots at our ESU cops, a cop is struck in the vest. We return fire, striking Edwards,” said Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.
One of the officers was shot while wearing a bullet-proof vest. It’s unclear if it was a direct shot or if it ricocheted off one of the shields. That officer was taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.
“Of course it was a close call. We have three bullets in the bunkers which could’ve easily been bullets inside of officers,” Maddrey said.
Meanwhile, EMS tried to save Edwards’ life, but he died at a local hospital. Police said he had 11 prior arrests dating back to 1995.
