Investigators continue to search for Kavion Brown Godfrey. On Thursday, his parents asked both the public and the police to keep looking for the 13-year-old.

Police said they started a search last Friday for Kavion after he was seen going into the East River. People nearby never saw him get out.

“My son was so happy. He loved us so much. Kavion would help anyone if you needed help. My son would help you,” said Laquana Badger-Godfrey, Kavion’s mother.

At the press conference, the family’s lawyer shared that Kavion was with his basketball coach at the time.

“There are serious questions regarding supervision that have arisen here,” said Sanford Rubenstein, the family’s attorney.

An investigation is underway regarding Kavion's supervision.

“Was there a responsibility of the Department of Education which was breached which caused this wrongful cause of death?” Rubenstein asked.

Kavion’s parents said he was supposed to be escorted to a soccer game by his basketball coach that afternoon.

“He told me sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” Kavion’s father, Darnell Godfrey, said of his conversation with the basketball coach.

Officials said the conditions of the East River were even challenging for divers.

“This child went into the water for whatever reason thinking he would be OK, but as we see over and over again when people go into the waters of New York City, the current is very difficult to manage,” said Tarik Sheppard, Deputy Commissioner of Public Information for the NYPD.

Kavion's mother holds onto hope.

“I know he’s out there and I want you guys to help me find my baby because I need him,” Badger-Godfrey said.

A spokesperson from the Department of Education said, “Our thoughts and hearts are with this student’s family, friends and the entire school community during this difficult time. We are providing additional emotional and mental health supports to the students at this school.”

Sources told NY1 student spectators at after-school sporting events are not supervised by coaches.
