In “This Must Be The Place," author Jesse Rifkin examines some of New York City’s most iconic music venues, and why they’ve vanished from our streets.
Rifkin, who has given walking tours throughout Manhattan for years, said he wanted to demystify and contextualize the legendary spaces from decades past.
“When you look at the spaces in which the music gets made, and you see how just totally mundane they are, the stories I think become a lot more accessible, a lot more human and a lot more possible,” Rifkin said.
In particular, Rifkin trains his eye on Lower Manhattan, an incubator of dozens of vibrant and experimental music scenes through the years.
“Within that small space, there were so many genres being born side by side, so many communities that were cross-pollinating and influencing each other for decades,” Rifkin said.
