“They were dedicated to being a part of the FDNY family,” said Eric Frizell, whose parents died of 9/11-related illnesses.
Friszell’s mother, EMS Captain Faye Baughman, was among those honored at a ceremony at FDNY headquarters in Downtown Brooklyn.
But his father, EMS Deputy Chief Joeddy Friszell, was added five years ago.
He says his parents met on the job.
His father died of esophageal cancer, and his mother died from PTSD.
“Dad’s onset was quick — within a year of his diagnosis. Unfortunately he passed, mom was a little longer, but since she lost dad it took a toll on her because unfortunately she reflected upon her time down there and that caused a lot of psychological issues which led to other issues,” he said.
There are 331 names on the wall.
The department says this is the second-largest group to be added since it was created in 2011.
“It is hard to comprehend that the number of members lost from WTC-related illness from that fateful day is approaching 343 that we lost on September 11, 2001,” said FDNY Chief of Department John Hodgens.
The ceremony is one of a number of events happening in the city, leading up to the anniversary of Sept. 11.
The World Trade Center Memorial and Museum tested the annual “Tribute in Lights,” which are two soaring beams of light that rise into the sky to recall the Twin Towers.
These events share the same goal to honor those who died because of that day and to simply never forget.
“I miss them every single day, but I know that the legacy they have left is the world and if I could be half of who they are, I would be amazing,” Frizell said.
