City beaches reopened in the Rockaways Monday morning following a fatal drowning of a teenage boy Sunday evening just as the Fourth of July holiday weekend got underway.

Police said the incident happened at Beach 73rd and Rockaway Beach at 6 p.m.

At approximately 5 p.m., lifeguards shut down the beach for swimming because of thunder and lightning, according to authorities.

The 14-year-old boy went into the ocean when the waters were closed to the public, and was last seen around 5:45 p.m., Basia Lieuwendowski, an ex-lifeguard who was there as a beachgoer, told NY1.

That’s when Lieuwendowski alerted lifeguards of the child’s disappearance and jumped into action.

She was followed shortly thereafter by more lifeguards, and together they pulled the child from the waters and immediately began conducting CPR.

The child was then transported to St. John's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:32 p.m.

The Parks Department said an investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

“Our hearts go out to the young man's family and friends following yesterday's tragedy,” Parks Department spokesperson Dan Kastanis said in a statement.

Police have not yet released the child’s name, though witnesses said he was at the beach with relatives.
