New York City saw a 22% jump in crime between 2021 and 2022, but its overall crime index declined for the second straight month in December, NYPD data released Thursday shows.

Police logged 126,537 crimes last year — a 22.4% increase from 2021, when the five boroughs recorded 103,388 crimes, the NYPD said in a press release. 

But the city did see an 11.3% drop in homicides year-over-year, with 433 murders reported in 2022 compared to 488 in 2021, the release said.

And December, like November, saw a decrease in overall crime compared to the same month in 2021, with 11.6% fewer crimes reported, the release added. 

The NYPD logged 26.1% fewer murders year-over-year in December, 25.9% fewer grand larcenies, 11.5% fewer rapes, 10.2% fewer burglaries and 8.3% fewer robberies, according to the release. 

Murders, burglaries, grand larcenies and grand larcenies auto ticked up between November and December of 2022 — the city recorded 34 homicides last month compared to 30 in November — but the number of rapes, robberies and felony assaults recorded declined, police data shows. 

Shooting incidents, meanwhile, declined year-over-year for all of 2022 and for December. 

The NYPD recorded 1,294 shooting incidents throughout 2022 — a 17.2% drop from 2021, when the department logged 1,562 incidents. December saw 85 shooting incidents, down by 29.2% from 120 in December of 2021, the release said. 

The number of hate crimes reported to the NYPD also declined, from 54 in December 2021 to 29 last month, according to the release. 

Transit crimes, however, were up by 4.6% year-over-year in December, with 205 reported last month compared to 196 in December of 2021. 

In a statement, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said her department was specifically focused on “reducing gun violence by treating it as the crisis it clearly is.” 

“This work was reflected in the year-over-year declines we saw in the hundreds of fewer shooting incidents, shooting victims and murders in 2022 — and our neighborhoods are safer because of it,” she said.
