Neighbors on New Lots Ave. in East New York came home to find much of their street blocked off, as the NYPD conducted an investigation into a police shooting of a suspect outside his home Tuesday.
According to police—the suspect, later identified as 30-year-old James Olla—had been involved in two assaults of individuals earlier in the day: one with a family member, the other with a 58-year-old woman who police say he knew.
Officers from the 84th and 75th precincts, working together, were able to locate Olla’s home on New Lots Ave following those incidents and came across the suspect sitting outside with a machete and a large butcher knife.
Police say he also threatened neighbors with the knives.
During a news conference near the scene of the incident afterwards, NYPD Chief of Patrol Jeffrey Maddrey said authorities approached Olla and told him repeatedly to put the knives down. Instead, Olla advanced towards officers, according to police.
An NYPD lieutenant then discharged two rounds from his weapon, striking the man in groin and low-to-mid-thigh area, Maddrey said.
Police say Olla was taken to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition.
Police say he has a criminal record and is on federal probation. Sources who know Olla say he may have been experiencing a mental episode.
Olla has been charged with attempted assault, attempted assault on a police officer, attempted assault with intent to injure a police officer, menacing a police officer and criminal possession of a weapon.
