Monday marks the first day residents of Queens can take advantage of curbside compost pickup services now being offered by the Sanitation Department.
It’s the city’s first borough-wide collection of food scraps, food-soiled paper, yard waste, and other biodegradable materials that can be separated and placed on the curb for regular pickup.
In most cases, compost will be collected on recycling days, and put to use beautifying parks and other green spaces around the city.
Around 30,000 brown bins specifically designed for compost have been given away by the city, but participants in the program are also invited to use their own sealed containers.
The department is promoting composting as not only good for the environment, but also for keeping rats away from city streets.
Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch joined “Mornings on 1” to discuss the city’s efforts to become more environmentally friendly.
