The West Indian Day Parade and J’Ouvert are returning to Brooklyn on Monday — and a handful of streets will be closed to traffic to make way for the festivities.
The city’s official J’Ouvert festival will kick off at Grand Army Plaza at 6 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 5 and end at 11 a.m., the NYPD said in a press release.
The department will cordon off the following streets starting at 11 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4, it said in the release:
- Flatbush Avenue from Grand Army Plaza to Empire Boulevard
- Empire Boulevard from Flatbush Avenue to Nostrand Avenue
- Nostrand Avenue from Empire Boulevard to Rutland Road
The West Indian Day Parade, which is set to be the first full-scale parade since 2019, will start at 11 a.m. and run along Eastern Parkway, beginning at Ralph Avenue, according to the release.
Two sets of street closures will take place ahead of and during the parade, the NYPD said:
6 a.m.
- Rockaway Parkway from Winthrop Street to Buffalo Avenue
- Buffalo Avenue from East New York Avenue to Lincoln Place
- East New York Avenue from East 94th Street to Ralph Avenue
- Portal Street from East New York Avenue to Eastern Parkway
- Rochester Avenue from East New York Avenue to Lincoln Place
- Union Street from Ralph Avenue to Portal Street
- Eastern Parkway from Ralph Avenue to Utica Avenue
10:30 a.m.
- No southbound traffic entering from Atlantic Avenue onto Eastern Parkway
- All northbound streets closed from Empire Boulevard towards Eastern Parkway
- Eastern Parkway closed to all traffic from Utica Avenue to Grand Army Plaza
- No southbound traffic on Flatbush Avenue from Grand Army Plaza to Empire Boulevard
- No northbound traffic on Flatbush Avenue from Church Avenue to Grand Army Plaza
- No southbound traffic on Ocean Avenue from Empire Boulevard to Parkside Avenue
- No northbound traffic on Ocean Avenue from Parkside Avenue to Empire Boulevard
The NYPD will be screening bags and containers for weapons at the following J’Ouvert entry points:
- Grand Army Plaza
- Empire Boulevard and Flatbush Avenue
- The north and south sides of Empire Boulevard and Washington Avenue
- The north side of Empire Boulevard and Franklin Avenue
- The south side of Empire Boulevard and Bedford Avenue
- The north and south sides of Empire Boulevard and Rogers Avenue
- The north and east sides of Empire Boulevard and Nostrand Avenue
- The east and west sides of Nostrand Avenue and Sterling Street
- The east and west sides of Nostrand Avenue and Lefferts Avenue
- The east and west sides of Nostrand Avenue and Lincoln Road
- The east and west sides of Nostrand Avenue and Maple Street
- The east and west sides of Nostrand Avenue and Midwood Street
- The east, west and south sides of Nostrand Avenue and Rutland Road
Large backpacks and alcohol will not be allowed into the area, the NYPD noted.
