One woman died and another was critically hurt after a large tree fell into an apartment building pool in the Bronx Monday afternoon, authorities said.
Officials say the incident occurred at 2621 Palisades Ave. at the River Terrace Apartments, a 17-story residential building, around 1:30 p.m.
Upon arrival, first responders encountered a 59-year-old, Donna Douglas, a resident from the building, who they pronounced dead at the scene. The city's Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Douglas's cause of death was a blunt force trauma in the head and identified the manner of death as accidental.
A second woman, 72, was in critical condition and taken to New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, police say. She is expected to live, authorities added.
After officials from the Department of Buildings conducted an investigation, the city put in place a partial vacate order on the entire swimming pool area in the building’s rear yard, and ordered the owner of the building to remove the fallen tree from the pool area.
A Parks Department official said the tree was not on public property.
Investigators say it is still not clear what caused the tree to fall.
