Orietta Vega missed her Friday flight to South Carolina because of a last-minute cancellation by Delta meant booking an expensive last-minute trip for Saturday on a different airline.

“It shortened our vacation to two days and a half instead of the four days,” said Vegas. “Very disappointing! And we are paying extra, a hotel, uber home, you count! On top of that, Spirit charges for carry-ons!”

Many airlines nationwide have been blaming severe weather and staff shortages for the ongoing inconvenience that would-be flyers have been experiencing over the past few days.

The flight tracking company FlightAware said that when it came to delays Saturday, JFK saw over 250 total delays, LaGuardia had over 80, and Newark Liberty experienced over 220 delays.

When it came to cancellations Saturday, JFK and Newark Liberty saw over 55 canceled flights, while LaGuardia had over 60.

“As far as I understand, people at the desk did say there’s been so many cancellations, so a lot of people were pushed from flights that were supposed to leave yesterday and the day before,” Parker Rook of Orlando said.

Rook says after being told his flight out of Newark Airport was oversold due to so many people trying to re-book canceled flight, he tried to fly out of LaGuardia. However, the lines were so long he wasn’t able to make it past security in time for that flight.

“I’m going to try to get a rental car and drive over to Hartford to fly out of there and make it home by 11am tomorrow,” Rook said, so that he could see his dad in time for Father’s Day.

Lisa Sinsiviero says her flight from Houston was delayed over two hours because of a crew change and a broken bathroom.
With the summer travel season now underway, she hopes the airline industry figures out a way for more flights to be on time.
