QUEENS — A civilian member of the NYPD was shot and killed in her apartment and another woman was hit by gunfire Monday morning in Queens, police say.
Police believe the victims, a 51-year-old woman who had worked for the NYPD for 11 years, and a 48-year-old woman, were shot by a 55-year-old man on the third floor of an apartment building on Fresh Pond Road shortly after 8 a.m., according to authorities.
Police believe the incident occurred after a domestic dispute took place between the man, who police later identified as Pedro Cintron, and Migdalia Ortega, who suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was removed by EMS to Elmhurst Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The 48-year-old woman, who has not yet been identified, suffered two gun shot wounds to her torso, police say. She was taken to Elmhurst Hospital and is in critical but stable condition, according to police.
In a news conference Monday afternoon, Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said, after a preliminary investigation, police believe the 48-year-old woman heard gun shots and went to check in on her neighbor, and that’s when the man began firing at her.
No arrests have been made, and a manhunt is currently underway for Cintron, according to police.
Police are asking anyone with information in regard to this incident to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
