Help is available for Erie County residents having trouble paying their utility bills. The county’s Home Energy Assistance Program is now accepting applications.
While regular benefits closed on April 29, Erie County officials say they’re accepting emergency benefit applications for people who are facing heat-related electric or heating issues.
"We expect a hot summer," said Daniel Szewc, ECDSS assistant deputy commissioner. "The Emergency and Cooling programs will help keep our residents safe and comfortable throughout the entire season. If a resident is interested in the either of these helpful programs, we urge them to contact our HEAP hotline at 716-858-7644 or heaphotline@erie.gov for further details."
The county also announced the opening for the 2022 Cooling Assistance Program. This can help with installation of a single room air conditioner or fan.
New this year, eligible applicants do not need to prove they have a medical condition made worse by the heat.
The program will be available until August 31 or until funding is finished.
You can apply in person at the HEAP office located on Main Street in Buffalo or by phone at 716-858-7644.
