Patrice Federick took photos of her windshield after a bullet shattered the glass from a shooting across the street from her home.
“Nothing! Nothing like this happens around here,” explained Federick. “I mean, it is a really quiet neighborhood, so I mean it is a little shocking.”
Police say two cars pulled up near a group of teens walking along 188th Street in Fresh Meadows Wednesday afternoon.
Someone got out of one of the cars, a verbal argument began, then bullets started flying, according to police.
Federick heard and saw it all happen from her window.
“It sounded like fire crackers. I said, ‘I hope that is not what I think it is,’ and I pulled my curtains back and saw everyone running down the street,” Federick said.
A 14-year-old girl was struck in the neck and taken to the hospital in critical condition but said to be stable.
Two 18-year-old boys were each shot in the leg.
The 14-year-old is a student at nearby Francis Lewis High School.
On Thursday, there was a large police presence outside the school and metal detectors on campus.
“It was kind of alarming because you don’t really expect this area to be shot like that or people here to get shot up,” said Keanan Luk, a junior at the school.
According to NYPD data, from January to mid-March of this year 24 people under 18 were victims of shootings.
For the same period last year, 13 people in that age group were shot. That is an 84% increase.
“Something has to be done obviously because you can’t just be walking down the street minding your business and shots ring out and innocent people get hurt like this,” said Gladstone Williams.
When you compare the shooting statistics for victims under 18-years-old in 2019 there were 64. In 2021, the number more than doubled to 138.
But comparing last year's data to the early 90's brings this into a different perspective.
There were roughly four times as many young victims from shooting incidents in 1991.
