Marylin Gonzalez says she has not had any hot water in her apartment since November.

She and some residents of the Carleton Manor Houses say the hot water and water pressure has been inconsistent in this public hosing development for years.

“I have a neighbor who has a hose going from her kitchen sink to the bathroom so her nine year old can take a shower," she explained. "It Is horrible and NYCHA just does not care.”

What You Need To Know

  • Residents of the Carleton Manor Houses in Queens say they have been without hot water and water pressure since November

  • Local elected officials are asking NYCHA to grant residents rent forgiveness for tenants through at least May 2022

  • In 40 units NYCHA says shut off valves need to be repaired, this work is scheduled for February 10th.

As a work around, Gonzalez and her 16-year-old daughter say they get up 5:30 every morning and boil water on their stove so they can brush their teeth and shower before school and work.

“Once we are in the bath, there is no shower. We have to use a bucket to throw the warm water on ourselves,” Gonzalez explained.

Local elected officials are now calling on NYCHA to allow the tenants dealing with these issues not to pay rent through at least May.

“NYCHA doesn’t give our residents a break if they don’t have the money for rent that month, so why should we give NYCHA a break for failing to do its basic duties?” questioned Queens Borough President Donovan Richards.

According to NYCHA, 40 units remain without hot water, about 30% of the building.

A spokesperson says crews are working around the clock to fix the problems and they plan to replace necessary valves on Thursday.

Gonzalez turned on her bathtub faucet and said, “This is our pressure, this is all we get,” as water trickled out of the spout.

Until it is fixed, Gonzalez says she will continue to boil water, but her patience is boiling over.

“Do something. Fix it. I mean, don’t just put a bandaid on it,” Gonzalez added.
