HAWAII — The Hawaii Department of Health reported an additional 24 cases of the omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus late Wednesday. The total number of confirmed cases in the state is now 74.
The DOH also noted in a press release that so far, all of the omicron cases are on Oahu, but there are four specimens from Hawaii Island and two specimens from Maui that contain a molecular clue that indicated they are likely omicron. Further testing is being done to determine if those cases are indeed omicron. These cases come from specimens collected from Dec. 7 through Dec. 13. DOH said that it expects omicron cases to increase rapidly statewide.
“Booster shots are more important than ever,” said health director Dr. Elizabeth Char, FACEP.
The news comes as the Christmas holiday weekend approaches and DOH also provided tips on how to celebrate safely. They include: limit gatherings to household members, celebrate with fully vaccinated and boosted people, gather outside, wear masks inside, maintain distance and take extra precautions to protect kupuna (elders) and those who can’t get vaccinated.
“Please, if you are eligible for a COVID-19 booster shot, get it now. Protect yourself and show aloha for family and friends by exercising caution this holiday season,” Char continued.
