NEW YORK — The new series “Harlem” highlights the New York City neighborhood as four 30-something women navigate their careers and relationships.
Creator Tracy Oliver, who also wrote the film “Girl’s Trip,” said she wanted to write about the time she spent in the city.
“I've always loved the city of Harlem,” said Oliver. “And I felt like it didn't get enough love and other shows that are set in New York like you see a lot of different parts of Manhattan, but not Harlem.”
Actors Meagan Good and Jerrie Johnson play Camille and Tye, two of the four friends trying to build careers and find love. They say the culture of Harlem is seen throughout the series.
“It feels like Harlem times 10 right? With the visuals and it's definitely informed by the culture that is just right there on the street, on 125th and beyond,” said Johnson.
“Yeah, it feels like Harlem times 10,” agreed Good. “But I think sometimes things aren't like represented in their true, like fullness of like, what it is if you just walk down the street in Harlem. And so I think that like we did that, you know, and, and there's something really, really fresh about that, because Harlem isn't just like our backdrop is literally like a character in the show.”
Grace Byers and Shoniqua Shandai also star in the series as Quinn and Angie. Byers says she sees just how much Harlem has changed over the years.
“I do feel like so much shift has happened,” said Byers. “What I will say though, is that I still feel in the streets of New York, the color, the artistry, the history, even though it's evolved, I still feel almost the the the the steps that our ancestors have walked before us.”
The 10 episode series is streaming now on Amazon Prime Video.
