Joanna Panagiotopoulos and her daugher Chrystiana were at LaGuardia Airport on the day before Thanksgiving. But not to catch a flight.
"My daughter's not feeling so great today so we're here for a quick rapid and PCR so we can see relatives tomorrow because it's Thanksgiving," Panagiotopoulos said.
So, the family from Flushing, Queens, headed to a city-run free COVID-19 testing site, inside LaGuardia Airport's parking lot at Terminal B.
"I'm a New York City teacher and a lot of my colleagues come here because it's the fastest and quickest way to get a PCR," she said.
The only testing site at LaGuardia Airport will close, on December 4.
One of three testing sites at John F. Kennedy Airport will also close. It's run by the city as well.
A Port Authority official said there was a decline in foot traffic at the sites, but the closures will come just weeks before people fly for Christmas gatherings.
In a statement, Adam Shrier, a spokesman for New York City Health + Hospitals Corporation, which runs the sites closing, said that "we are actively working with Port Authority," which oversees the region's airports, "to find alternative accessible testing options."
That includes mobile sites.
The test sites are obviously not just insider tips for Queens residents. Flyers find them convenient. too
"I just got into New York, from Michigan, to LaGuardia Airport and I need the test result to see Broadway," Oyeon Oh, who flew into LaGuardia Airport, said. "So this is the closest one to test."
And Noam Blauer is getting a last minute test before a flight to Canada
"I just remembered last night at 8 p.m. that i needed a test result," he said.
He says finding a place to get a fast PCR test and at low cost was tough
"It's really not obvious when you google where to get a test and aht's it gonna cost and how to make an appointment," Blauer said. "I spent a lot of time looking for results and it's not obvious where to go."
But with his flight in hours, the LaGuardia Airport site was the most convenient
If he could get that fast result, he said, "it probably shouldn't be closed."
