NEW YORK — Governor Andrew Cuomo announced his decision to step down amid sexual harassment allegations as the right thing for New York.

"The best way I can help now is if I step aside and let government get back to governing, and so that's what I'll do" said Cuomo.

Feminists leaders say it's an absolute win for women's rights and for the state.

"I agree that the right thing for him to have done was to resign and I think we're all a little bit relieved" said Sonia Ossorio, president of NOW NYC.

Me Too founder Tarana Burke pushing push back on Cuomo's attempt to describe the interpretation of his actions with accusers as generational or cultural shifts that have led to misunderstandings.

She tweeted: "The *rules* have NOT changed. It was WRONG 50 years ago and today."

But, as his resignation clears to way for Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul to become governor, Ossorio says the moment is bittersweet.

"That's history that's being made and she is going to do a terrific job," said Ossorio. "On the other hand we have yet another powerful political official who has betrayed the public's trust and the women that worked with him."

Hochul is now poised to become the first female governor of New York. She tweeted that she is ready to lead as New York's 57th governor. Ossorio trusts that Hochul will deliver on that promise.

"As an advocate I have seen her come to the table, learn an issue, understand it ask all the right questions and get out there and advocate for it," said Ossorio.

Cuomo's resignation also means senate majority leader Andrea Stewart Cousins will become lieutenant governor.

Two women are now set to lead the state into the future.
