The Bronx Dominican Day Parade was back in full swing Sunday. The pandemic forced organizers to cancel festivities last year, but this year the borough celebrated Dominican pride with its 32nd annual event.

“It’s a joyous day to bring everybody together in the community,” said Karen Hernandez, a Bronx resident. “The pandemic separated a lot of people. We lost loved ones, but we’re here to celebrate.”

Hernandez’s family has lived in the city for over 30 years. She told NY1 she believes the parade signifies the love New York still has for Dominican culture.  

“We’re very loyal, family oriented, united. Wherever you’re at, if you’re Dominican, you’re just whole,” said Hernandez.  

The parade started at the Grand Concourse and East Tremont Avenue and headed towards East 166th Street. Along with the dancing and music, the food, another Dominican staple, was on display.

“I’m very happy and I’m very thrilled that they’re doing it again,” said Ericka Disla, another Bronx resident. 

Fellow Bronx native Loraine Montero agreed. 

“I was born in DR and I miss it. I haven’t been in a while because of COVID. Just to come and show support, there’s a big Dominican community here,” said Montero.
