Fare hikes for MTA subways and buses are off the table this year as New York pulls out from the coronavirus pandemic, an MTA board member said Monday.
"I don't think at this time and place, raising fares on any New Yorkers is appropriate," Larry Schwartz, an MTA board member and former top aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, said at the agency's monthly meeting. "At a time when we need to encourage increased ridership, raising fares does the opposite."
The MTA put off a vote earlier this year on raising fares, while hiking prices on the agency's bridges and tunnels by 7%.
Still, Schwartz said it is possible that the MTA board will approve a fare hike next year.
The MTA has raised fares and tolls once every two years since 2009.
