A Circle of Heroes monument honoring essential workers during the pandemic will open on Labor Day this year, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday morning.
The monument was designed by representatives of essential workers and will be located in Battery Park City.
It will consist of 19 maple trees surrounding a circular pathway.
The circle is meant to represent how the contributions from all essential groups were connected in helping the state endure the pandemic.
In the center, an eternal flame will be lit to honor the lives that were lost during the pandemic. The monument will also feature a quote from the late longtime city reporter Jim Dwyer.
