If I’m Alive Next Week is an episodic short series with New York City written all over it. The series is part of Tribeca Now, which is dedicated to content online. The creators, co-stars and couple — Jennifer Morris and Robbie Sublett — shot in the city and hope to turn it into a longer series.

“In our dream, it's going to be a half-hour long,” said Morris. “But because we did it independently on our own, with the amazing Joyce Van Patten, we constructed them so that they would be like six to eight minutes long and could live online.”

What You Need To Know

  • If I'm Alive Next Week is a series of shorts written by, directed and starring real-life couple Jennifer Morris and Robbie Sublett

  • The series is about Morris' and Sublett's experience living with Morris' mother, who is played - hilariously - by Joyce Van Patten in the series

  • Tribeca Now is a streaming a portion of the Tribeca Festival that highlights independent storytellers

The series’ star is a is a foul-mouthed grandma named Marjorie, who must live with her daughter family. Marjorie is based on Morris’ real-life mother and the couple’s time living with her.

“We had so much material from living with Jenny's mom and our daughter in a two-bedroom apartment for five years, the stories wrote themselves," said Sublett. "Jenny's mom is a character who knows no halfway.”

"It's so real to me," said Van Patten. "That woman is so real. We know her. Don't we all know her? She had a lot of dreams, they didn't really turn out as great as she was hoping that they would."

Like a true New Yorker, Marjorie says what she means, and means what she says.

When I asked Morris if her mother still speaks to her she responded, "Yeah, she does. She loves it. She’s thrilled to have a show about her.”

“She’s great. I like her. I like her a lot," added Van Patten. “She’s an interesting woman, totally.”

“Every time she watches the series she says, 'Oh, I really love the woman that's playing me. She's so good. She's really good,'" Morris said.

Morris added that the series is about her mom, but it’s for New York City.

“We wanted to write something that was sort of a love letter to New York also," said the filmmaker. "And my mom is, you know, she's been here since she was 18 and she just has the heart and soul of a New Yorker. She's a fighter.”
