It was supposed to be a rebuttal to recent attacks.
Eric Adams held a press conference with supporters in Downtown Brooklyn on Wednesday, unveiling a new ad that calls recent attacks against him an expletive.
But his message was quickly disrupted.
“Just get my message out,” Adams said over a light din of protest. "Some people want to disrupt us, but it’s about getting my message out.”
Simultaneously, a dozen protesters descended on the Adams event, attempting to shut it down.
They were, at least in part, successful. Quickly, Adams’ team moved his press conference down the street where the two groups faced off.
Protesters yelled for voters not to rank Eric Adams. Adams’ supporters called back the candidate’s name over and over.
“Eric Adams!” echoed down the street.
Adams was surrounded by supporters. He attempted to answer reporters’ questions at the same time.
“Listen, this is New York and you have different views,” Adams said. "And if you focus on the small number of protesters and the large number of people here supporting me, listen, I have disrupted press conferences in my day.”
Even if it was a bit chaotic, as he was shuffled out of the crowd to an awaiting car, he yelled back.
“Don’t make me look like I am running from anybody!” Adams said.
The protesters are from a political action committee called Our City. The group has also protested Andrew Yang.
They have not endorsed a specific candidate. The group is trying to push a progressive candidate versus more moderate ones — like Yang or Adams.
“We’re here to warn New Yorkers don’t rank Eric Adams,” said one of the organizers, Maria Bautista. "He has received a ton of money from millionaires and billionaires intent on privatizing our public education."
Sources within One City told NY1 they are planning to target Eric Adams throughout the rest of the race. They are also planning some digital advertising as well.
