An emotional Terrence Floyd celebrated the life of his late brother George Sunday, days before the one year anniversary of his death.
George Floyd died during an attempted arrest by Minneapolis police on May 25.
The incident, caught on camera, shows former police officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes.
“Less than five, six years of me bonding with him and trying to make a plan to link up with him, these police officers took him from me,“ said Terrance Floyd at a rally in front of Brooklyn Borough Hall.
While celebrating George’s life with performances and a painting, Terrence also launched his new organization.
The non-profit We Are Floyd will be based in Brooklyn and dedicated to honoring Floyd’s life through community service and leadership.
“He always told me, ‘Little bro, you are not a quitter, you got a voice,’ and I am gonna use it,” Floyd said. “I am thankful he gave me those words. He is probably saying to me right now, ‘I am proud of you, man.'"
Floyd said the nonprofit’s focus will be on reaching the youth, especially those struggling with mental illness and poverty.
“I am trying to partner with people to help with the mental illness, to change the police policies so they won’t have to deal with the knee on the necks or the countless unbearable shootings happening to our people,” Floyd said.
Floyd described the last year for his family as a roller coaster of emotions.
Feeling great sorrow for their loss, support from the thousands of demonstrators and victory in the conviction of former police officer Derek Chauvin.
“The world woke up. Finally, their eyes are open to what we already knew,” said Floyd. "I am so proud to say that my culture changed the face of justice.”
The Floyd family said they will take this week to celebrate George’s life and to miss him, but then the focus is back on the work still left to be done.
“It is not a moment, it is a movement and I want them to keep that same energy and stay woke,” Floyd said.
