THE BRONX — Police are looking for a man seen in disturbing surveillance video throwing one rock after another at a synagogue in Riverdale.

Investigators with the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force believe the same man is responsible for a series of vandalisms that have targeted at least four synagogues and Jewish centers in Riverdale since Friday.

“It’s just horrible,” said David Klaers, who often worships at the Riverdale Jewish Center, which police say was targeted both Friday and Saturday, leaving broken glass by the synagogue’s windows and front door. “I don’t even understand why someone would do this. It feels not only do they have hate but also probably psychiatric disturbance. I’m not sure what they’re trying to get at.”

Becky Hirschfield of Riverdale also goes there to worship and said the incidents are concerning.

“This feels very targeting because a number of places, number of Jewish institutions in a very small geographic area with repeated visits," said Hirschfield. "It’s very threatening.”

Michelle Schindelheim, a Riverdale resident, told NY1 that on the same night that a vandal broke several windows at the Riverdale Jewish Center, she discovered that someone threw a garbage pail at the rear of her car, which had been parked outside the synagogue.

“I don’t understand why this guy hates Jews so much,” said Schindelheim. “I think that Jews have given a lot to the world, medically, scientifically, and yet there’s people that want to hurt them. I don’t get it.”

In a joint statement Sunday, Congressman Jamaal Bowman and some local politicians from the area said the incidents are a somber reminder about the vigilance needed to end anti-Semitism.
