- The shooter has been identified as 38-year-old Fantahun Girma Woldesenbet, who was assigned to Fort Detrick but lived off-base
- One victim is in critical condition, the other is expected to be released from the hospital Wednesday
- Authorities said Woldesenbet’s motive and his relationship to the victims is under investigation
The man entered a business around 8:20 a.m. at the Riverside Tech Park, causing people inside to flee, Frederick Police Chief Jason Lando said.
When police arrived, they found that two adult men had been wounded. They were flown by helicopter to a Baltimore trauma center. Police initially said both men were in critical condition, but then said at an afternoon news conference that one was critical while the other is expected to be released from the hospital Wednesday.
Brig. Gen. Michael Talley said both victims are Navy sailors.
The business park includes a “military institution,” police said.
The shooter, identified as Fantahun Girma Woldesenbet, 38, then drove to Fort Detrick, about 4 miles away, where he was fatally shot by police around 8:45 a.m., officials said.
Frederick police had issued an alert to be on the lookout for the gunman’s vehicle. Soon after, he sped past the checkpoint at the base’s gates before being stopped in parking lot about half-mile inside the grounds, authorities said. He brandished a weapon, prompting police to open fire, authorities said.
Life-saving efforts were performed for about 20 minutes before Woldesenbet succumbed to his injuries.
Talley said the efforts of the Frederick and Fort Detrick police departments “prevented further injuries and further loss.”
Police said they believe there was only one gunman and that the community is no longer in any danger.
Authorities said Woldesenbet’s motive and his relationship to the victims is under investigation. The gunman was assigned to Fort Detrick but lived off-base in Frederick, a city of around 70,000 people located about 50 miles northwest of Baltimore.
Woldesenbet used a rifle in the business park shootings, but authorities could not say if that was the same weapon he was holding when he was shot.
Lando called the shootings “very tragic.”
“It's happening too frequently,” he said. “Every time we turn on the TV, we're seeing something like this happen. And now it's happening in our backyard. So no one wants to see this type of thing.”
Fort Detrick is a U.S. Army base in Frederick that is home to the military’s flagship biological defense laboratory and several federal civilian biodefense labs.
