The Grammys are one of the most anticipated events of the year. After the musical performances are done and the last award is handed out, the celebrities leave, but not empty handed.
New York will be represented in this year’s gift bag, thanks to fashion designer and Bronx-native Jevaughn Williams, better known as Mugzy McFly.
“The Grammys are undeniable, just the name alone — to be connected to that in any shape or fashion — is amazing,” said Mugzy McFly.
He will be providing a gift card that can be used for his streetwear label Signed by McFly. The 33-year-old was asked to take part in music’s biggest night and he jumped at the opportunity.
“If one those performers, let’s say Cardi B, gets a gift card in the gift bag and they got it from the Grammys, I think my introduction with her from the Grammys is way bigger than me hitting her up in the D.M. or someone in the street telling her about me. I think that means that this has to be someone of value. It’s like a stamp of approval,” McFly explained.
Mugzy McFly’s fashion journey began as a teenager, when he learned how to use photoshop to design t-shirts to match his sneakers.
“I had a shirt that said ‘More dreams, less sleep,’ which is my slogan till this day,” said McFly.
After earning his degree in accounting, he gave that industry a try, but fashion was his calling.
In 2013, McFly changed gears, handling every aspect of it from his home in Wakefield.
Designing, production and marketing is a lot of work, but it’s paying off. Hip-hop artists, athletes and social media influencers are already donning his pieces.
“You’re your own competition. If I’m at one this year, my goal is to be at two next year. I’m only trying to be better than myself,” said McFly.
He says his hometown may not get all the credit it deserves from the fashion industry, even though renowned designers Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren were born in the Bronx.
McFly hopes to one day have the same name recognition.
“I want to be a household name. I want to be overseas. I want to have credit, strength in my name,” he said.
