Some of entertainment’s top women comedians joined forces to eulogize 2020 with laughs in a comedy special called Yearly Departed. The cast of eulogists at this funny funeral includes Tiffany Haddish, Sarah Silverman, and one of the executive producers, Rachel Brosnahan.
NY1’s George Whipple spoke with Brosnahan and head writer Beth Kalb about the special, where the women take turns at the pulpit to say goodbye to everything from pants to the current president.
Kalb told Whipple there’s something for everyone at this funeral.
“I wanted to make sure that we hit on something that everyone could relate to. And the representation of topics in the show from casual sex to pants to what Patti (Harrison) brilliantly eulogizes — rich girl Instagram influencers — are things that people are so ready to say goodbye to,” Kalb said.
Brosnahan, an Emmy and Golden Globe winner for her role in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, told Whipple why she signed onto the project.
“It's an incredible idea. This year has been a dumpster fire. We needed somehow to lay to rest one of the worst years in recent memory. We can't think of a better way to lay this year to rest than by letting some of the funniest women we know have the last word,” said Brosnahan.
She also said the all-female cast was a big draw for her.
“We’re long overdue for more specials that are just featuring women and that also extended to behind the camera. Our production team was almost entirely female, our director, Linda Mendoza, our DP (Director of Photography,) our editors, our composer, you know, there were women at every single layer of this production,” Brosnahan said. “It's important to me as a woman in this industry, but also it was something that was very, very important to Bess (Kalb) as a woman in comedy and a woman who cut her teeth in late night, which is obviously such a male-dominated comedy space, as is the industry in general.”
One thing Brosnahan personally can’t wait to say goodbye to is Zoom.
“You know, with Zoom being the only way you can see people's faces, I am ready to lay to rest morning to night Zooming from 2020.”
Brosnahan said she is ready to see people in person.
Still, Brosnahan did note some good things in 2020, for instance, the way some have reacted since COVID-19.
“I think even though we're in a time of enormous division, where there's, you know, this country is so polarized right now, we have really seen people step up and be there for each other, even from a distance. I feel like there has been this sense of coming together, even at a time when we're forced to be really far apart.”
Yearly Departed is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
