For students walking home from school on 72nd Drive — a detour into the street is necessary to avoid a massive tree stump and the cracked sidewalk surrounding it.

“I think it’s terrible. I think it’s disgusting. I don’t think it’s fair. This is really effecting the quality of our lives,” said Jennifer Martin, a Kew Gardens Hills resident.

What You Need To Know

  • Hurricane Isaias uprooted hundreds of trees across the city during a fast-moving storm back in August
  • In Kew Gardens Hills, a massive stump and cracked sidewalk remains on 72nd Drive

  • In Sunnyside, on 39th Avenue, the tree stump has been removed but the sidewalk is still broken

Hurricane Isaias uprooted a massive tree in front of Martin’s home back in August. The city parks department removed it, leaving a huge stump and a cracked sidewalk behind.

Martin says she’s complained to the city and was told the slow response is the result of issues related to the coronavirus.

But Martin says she’s been warned she could be fined for the makeshift barriers she’s put up to keep people from tripping over the broken sidewalk.

“You know what? Fine me. But I’m not going to allow people to walk across a dangerous sidewalk,” said Martin.

The local state Assemblyman, Daniel Rosenthal, says the city is not doing its job.

“Our streets, our sidewalks, and safety is the basic governmental responsibility and New York City is very simply failing at that task,” said Rosenthal. "This is not a complicated thing — this are basics. And when you’re failing at basics, it’s really a concerning thing."

About seven miles away in Sunnyside are more remnants of Isaias’s damage. While the parks department removed a tree stump there, the sidewalk is still broken.

“As you can see, the Department of Transportation has been non-responsive and has refused to fix the sidewalk,” said Van Bramer.

The parks department tells NY1 it knows of at least 337 stumps left behind by Isaias that are affecting sidewalks and 137 have been removed so far. It said the remaining stumps will be cleared away in the coming weeks. It is unclear when sidewalk repairs will be completed. The DOT did not respond to our request for comment.
