NEW YORK -- Two infant boys were found dead in the Bronx on Monday afternoon, according to the city police department.

The children were found behind an apartment building, just off an alley, near East 171st Street in the Claremont section of the borough around 1:45 p.m. after a 911 call for two unconscious infants, according to police.

They were transported to Bronx-Lebanon Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The NYPD did not confirm if the boys were twins or related. Their exact ages were not confirmed.

The city's medical examiner will determine their causes of death.

Preliminary info suggests the children were murdered, sources said. An investigation is ongoing.

A law enforcement source tells NY1 the boys are believed to be newborns because they still had their umbilical cords attached when they were found.

The source tells us one of the boys was wrapped in a plastic bag and the other in a blanket.

Police officials say they do not have surveillance video of the location at this time.

Anyone with information on the case should contact the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-8477, or text CRIMES and then enter TIP577, or visit www.nypdcrimestoppers.com
