BRONX, N.Y. - As the 6 Train rumbles towards its terminus after a more than hour long journey from Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall Station in Manhattan, it travels through the Pelham Bay neighborhood in the Bronx until it halts to a stop at the Pelham Bay Park Station.

What You Need To Know

  • The last stop on the 6 Train in the Bronx is Pelham Bay Park in the Pelham Bay neighborhood

  • The station is named for nearby Pelham Bay Park, the city's largest public park

  • Pelham Bay Park is more than three times the size of Manhattan's Central Park

  • Travelers can link to the bus at Pelham Bay Park station for quick rides to Orchard Beach and City Island

It's the gateway to the city's largest public park of the same name, more than three times as large as Central Park.

The neighborhood itself features a mix of old and new businesses, like an appropriately named Pizza Place called Last Stop on the 6, and the popular Pelham Bay Mini Mart, bustling with MTA workers and others from the neighborhood.

"I would say that if you are coming to Pelham Bay, and you want to come and have a nice cup of coffee, you're in the right place,” said Teresa, a Pelham Bay resident.

Around the corner on Westchester Avenue outside Peghe's Deli, Jose Sosa is concocting fresh juices in a small booth. He's worked there for six months, and despite the close quarters, says he enjoys his job and the people he meets through it.

"It's fun to interact with customers, people, get to know them,” said Sosa.

A few blocks away I met Eva Mekshiqui at the Dardania European Market, which caters to Bronx residents from Albania and other Balkan countries.

"They usually shop in this store, and a lot of things are from their home countries, so they are very excited to find it here,” said Mekshiqui, who is Albanian, and proceeded to let me try an Albanian candy bar and an apricot-flavored soda.

You might want to take that soda to the beach. Orchard Beach is a quick bus ride away and nice and quiet this time of year.

The bus will also get you to City Island for some New England-style charm and fresh seafood from a variety of restaurants, some with waterfront dining, too.

"You eat some shrimp, you go to the park, you can do anything you want,” said longtime Pelham Bay resident Ray, who added that it’s a very good neighborhood.
