NEW YORK — The method of remembrance may have been different this year, but the emotion and meaning remaind the same Friday.

The official ceremony to honor the Staten Islanders killed on September 11th took place online with each victim’s name read aloud in pre-recorded segments that aired in a live streamed service that included performances from past ceremonies.

What You Need To Know

  • Instead of the annual service at the Postcards 9/11 Memorial, the ceremony was held online

  • Each victim’s name was read aloud in pre-recorded segments that aired in a live streamed service

  • Many still visited the Postcards Memorial to remember their loved ones

Some spent the day visiting the borough’s Postcards 9/11 Memorial, where the names of more than 270 Staten Island victims are inscribed.

"I lost my brother on 9/11" said one man. "He was like a bedrock in the family, and it's just a day of strong remembrance of remembering the times we had."

The ceremony would have been held there if not for the pandemic, but it still served as a solemn place to remember.

"This gives us a place to come, to show our respect and our love for those that were lost,” one mourner said.

As the losses continue to mount from those who have died from 9/11-related illnesses, the notes and flowers left at the memorial show they'll never be forgotten.
