After being closed since March, the trendy Bowery Hotel is planning to reopen on September 4, an exception in what has become a bleak year for the city's hotel and tourism industry.  

"What we are hoping to achieve right now is less net loss on a monthly basis as we open, it's not to become profitable necessarily, it’s so that we are in a place of losing less money,” Director of Sales and Marketing at the Bowery Hotel Leo Jacob said.

Jacob says the hotel is adopting new safety protocols to limit the transmission of the virus. For example, rooms will not be used for at least 24 hours after a guest has checked out.

"We're not going to be at 95% capacity for quite some time,” Jacob said. “We're going to use that time to disinfect and sanitize the room with utmost scrutiny."

Jacob says outdoor spaces like the Penthouse at the Bowery Hotel are the most sought out in the New York City hotel market so guests can enjoy some fresh air while also practicing social distancing.

Because it can safely accommodate guests, the outdoor penthouse is being eyed by many couples as a space for weddings attended by up to 25 people.

"The majority of inquiries I'm getting right now are for these micro-weddings to take place. Since we announced we are reopening, we are getting 15 a day,” Jacob said.

One problem facing this hotel and the city's tourism industry in general is the large number of states on Governor Cuomo's quarantine list — visitors from those states must spend 14 days in quarantine before moving about New York.

The Bowery has lowered room rates by $200, to $395 a night in September and October. Ellie Collin, a travel advisor for three decades, says she has never seen such a bleak summer for tourism in the city.

“There's no theater whatsoever," Collins said. "The museums are closed, it's a shell of itself. People come here for these wonderful cultural things."

It's tough time for hotels and the hospitality industry as the coronavirus pandemic rages on.
