Fire officials say 36-year-old Damien Bend is the man seen on a surveillance video setting off fireworks before things went horribly wrong.

A Brooklyn home was destroyed when a burst from one of them went through an open window, igniting a blaze on the first floor.

“This is my room. This is where I was sleeping, so if I was basically still in there at that time sleeping, I would have burned up,” said resident Joshua King.

King said he was lucky he wasn't home at the time. He had left minutes before to visit his girlfriend.

“I came back home. I saw the fire blazing. I saw my family out here. Everybody crying. Everyone was traumatized,” he said.

The incident happened on June 24 at a home on East 51st Street in the Flatlands section of Brooklyn.

FDNY said it took 60 firefighters to get the flames under control at the two-and-a-half story home.

Bend was arrested and charged with arson in the fourth degree. The house was completely destroyed.

“It hurt my heart man because this is our house we don’t have anywhere else. What we supposed to do after this” said King.

A neighbor who didn't want to be identified told NY1 that someone had been setting off fireworks for weeks before this happened.

The Fire Department says fire marshals have arrested 17 people citywide and confiscated $36,000 worth of illegal fireworks over the last nine days.
