Bronx-born Milton Glaser, the graphic designer who created the iconic "I ❤️ NY" logo, died yesterday. It was his 91st birthday.

Co-founder of New York Magazine, Glaser was known for his logos, advertisements and book covers that captured the spirit of the 1960s with simple colors and shapes. Free of charge, he created the “I Heart New York” logo as part of a 1977 ad campaign. It was meant to boost the state’s image amid the crime and budget troubles that plagued the city.

Days after the September 11th terror attacks, Glaser revised it, adding a dark scar to the red heart and “more than ever” to the message.

Glaser's work has been displayed around the world.

He received a number of awards, including a Lifetime Achievement award from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and the National Medal of Arts.
