NEW YORK - New Yorkers will soon have some relief from the hot summer weather.

Starting next week, the city's beaches will be open for swimming.

During his daily press briefing Wednesday, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that swimming wil be allowed starting July 1.

Lifeguards have been trained and certified and will be ready by Wednesday.

Beach goers will need to follow social distancing rules, wear masks and refrain from group activities.

“The state has issued guidelines that are very, very clear about how we don’t make the mistake of allowing the coronavirus to spread again and I don’t have to remind you all, I think you’ve seen it in the news. We’ve seen too many states in this country—a huge horrible resurgence of this disease. We’re not gonna let it happen here," De Blasio said.

Amusement rides like those in Luna Park and The Wonder Wheel are still closed.

They are considered entertainment and recreation activities under Phase Four of the reopening plan.
